EXISTENTIAL CRISIS or

WHY PEOPLE FIND IT HARD TO BELIEVE IN ALIENS or

SPACE SONNET 1

sea lions dart from rock / gray-blur giant eyes

black mirrors floating under the surface

announce who’s in control / trainers arrive

with silver / mackerels / sardines / tourists

around the enclosure / feeding-time stars

pop out under red sun and smack a fin

bust backflips / a steep hierarchy of charge

hand commands / a surf-god / applause begins

how we marvel at their intelligence

tickles us wow at how kind-of smart they

are and how we are all shy witnesses

entertained/ impatient/ sweaty long days

summoned histories / finding galaxies         /    But why might we not be ready to know?

Would we face our late reciprocities         /     our laws / our justice / how we keep control?
